This is a song about repetition. Featuring a group of well known Americans – Presidents Reagan, Bush (Sr. and W.), Clinton, and Obama – “How Would You Know?” strives to point out that the leaders of our country are not saying anything new in respect to the ongoing issues we face as a nation. Buffett’s reminding us that leaders on both sides can get us in and out of wars, economic peril and political gridlock. And that choosing the “right” one may be much more difficult than voting along party lines.
Everything got turned around you see
What was up is down as plain as it could beAnd we're all out to sea
Seems like everyone is paralyzedStaring blankly at a screen that feeds the lieIt's eating from inside
If nobody ever sold youDo you think you would ask for more?If nobody ever showed youWould you know what the fighting's for?If nobody ever told youTell me how you would know what's yours?
I don't think we have to compromiseJust a world without the greed and all the liesNo one has to die
The Truth. Where is it? How do we find it? How do we know it? I wrote this song as yet another plea for questioning and answering. And when I was finished, I thought that it could use some sound bites. I’ve always loved to put together sound collages. My favorite is the Urban Overture from Spirit – The Seventh Fire. In it, I tried to create the sound of America going from what I called “analogue invention to digital consumerism”.
